Windows

Apple Music for Windows is a Microsoft Store app whose icon cannot be edited. The script below creates a shortcut that launches the real app with your icon. You then pin that shortcut to Start or the taskbar.

1. Pick your icon

2. Download and run the script

Open PowerShell (Start > type "PowerShell"), as a normal user, not as Administrator, and paste:

powershell -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File "$HOME\Downloads\iconrewind-music.ps1"

We deliberately do not offer a "paste this one-liner from the internet" command: the script contains your chosen icon, so there is no fixed hosted file, and you should read what you run. It is shown in full below.

If Windows blocks the file

Files downloaded in a browser carry a "from the internet" mark. -ExecutionPolicy Bypass usually handles the policy side. If PowerShell or SmartScreen still complains, remove the mark yourself after reading the script:

Unblock-File "$HOME\Downloads\iconrewind-music.ps1"

What the script does

  • Needs PowerShell 5.1 (built into Windows 10 and 11). Refuses to run elevated. Needs no admin rights, registry edits or network access.
  • Finds Apple Music in your Start menu apps. If it is not installed it stops and tells you to install it from the Microsoft Store first. Only the Microsoft Store version is supported.
  • Writes your icon to %LOCALAPPDATA%\iconrewind\music.ico and creates iconrewind Music.lnk in your Start menu (and on the Desktop unless you opt out).
  • Only overwrites shortcuts it created itself, so running it again just updates the icon.

3. Pin it

Windows 11 does not let scripts pin apps for you, so finish by hand:

  1. Find the shortcut

Start > All > iconrewind Music.

  2. Pin it

Right-click it > Pin to Start, or More > Pin to taskbar. Then unpin the original Apple Music tile if you like.

Limits you should know about

  • While Apple Music is running, its taskbar button may still show the stock icon, and a pinned shortcut that launches through explorer.exe may show a second button.
  • "All apps" keeps listing the original entry with the new icon.
  • App updates do not touch your shortcut or icon, so it survives them.
  • We have not tested every Windows build; please report what you see.

Undo

The undo script removes the shortcuts it created and the icon file. Unpin the shortcut afterwards if you pinned it.

powershell -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File "$HOME\Downloads\iconrewind-music-undo.ps1"
